Jos Central Mosque gets new Imam

Sheikh Lawal Adam was over the weekend elevated to the post of Chief Imam of Jos Central Mosque.

In addition, an area Court Judge, Ustaz Ghazali Ismaila Adam, is to serve as the Deputy Imam.

The two decisions, according to a Muslim source, were reached on Thursday at the Joint Executive Committee meeting of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Jos North Local Government Area Chapter and the Jos Central Mosque Committee.

It was held at boardroom of its secretariat.

The JNI Secretary for Jos North Local Government Area, Ustaz Aminu Sadis, said the meeting endorsed the elevation of Adam, who was the Deputy Imam, to the position of the Chief Imam.

Sadis said: “In conjunction with the Jos Central Mosque, the Committee has approved the confirmation of Sheikh Lawal Adam (the former deputy imam) as the new substantive Chief Imam and Ustaz Ghazali Ismaila Adam as the new Deputy Chief Imam (Nai’bi).

“The decision was reached on the 28th day of May, 2015 after wider consultations with key stake holders and other Islamic groups.

“JNI prays for the successful tenure of the new Chief Imam and his deputy and they counsel the Chief Imam to continue to display the rare traits and spiritual qualities he is known for.

“We pray for the repose of the soul of the late Chief Imam, Sheikh Zakariyya Balarabe Dawud.”

Sheikh Adam has been the Deputy Chief Imam of the Jos Central Mosque since 2009.

Further information that reached our correspondent said Sheikh Khalid Aliyu Abubakar the JNI Secretary-General; Adam; Shiekh Abdual’azeez Yusuf, the state Deputy Chairman of the JNI, who is also the Chairman of Jos Central Mosque; Alhaji Garba Abdulaqadir; Shiekh Abubakar Bafullace; as well as many other Ulamas were present at the meeting.

The source said: “The meeting was jointly held between the JNI and the Mosque Committee.

“Two other contenders for the position of the Deputy Imam were earlier on disqualified and all accepted.”

Ustaz Ghazali was until his selection as Deputy Imam an area court judge with the Plateau State Judiciary.

He is a son to the former Grand Khadi of the state, late Ismaila Adam.

Sheikh Adam succeeded Shiekh Dawud who died last Sunday after an illness.
