The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has said he is considering running for the presidency in 2019.
Saraki said this in an interview with US-based news outlet, Bloomberg.
Saraki, who spoke with Bloomberg in his Abuja residence, said: “I am consulting and actively considering it.
“I believe I can make the change.”
Saraki, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party, will not only have President Muhammadu Buhari to contend with.
While Buhari is so far the only aspirant that has shown interest in the race in the APC, no fewer than five persons have indicated their desire to run on the platform of the PDP.
Among them are former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; and former Minister of Special Duties in the Goodluck Jonathan Administration, Kabiru Taminu Turaki.
Speaking on the PDP, Saraki said the party has learnt its lesson from the failure it recorded in 2015.
He told Bloomberg: “The PDP has learnt its lesson from the loss in 2015, and I think unfortunately the APC did not learn from their victory.
“We have the opportunity with the right kind of presidential candidate and president to provide the leadership for the party. The party has a good opportunity to lead the country in the right direction.”
