Richard Gasquet will not compete for France at the 2016 Olympics after being struck down by a back injury.
Gasquet has been struggling with the issue ever since he was forced to pull out of the fourth-round clash against compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon recently.
The 30-year-old was trailing 4-2 in the first set at the time of withdrawal and barely managed to carry his bags off the court, with his opponent having to help him.
It was hoped the 2004 French Open doubles champion would be back for the global event, with the tennis running from August 7 to 15, but he has been unable to recover.
World number 24 Benoit Paire will instead compete in the singles after being called up as a replacement while Gael Monfils will now team-up with Tsonga in the doubles.
France will be disappointed to lose Gasquet for the competition in Brazil but they have shown they can survive without him, having successfully negotiated the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup quarter-final recently.
Yannick Noah’s men recorded a 3-1 victory to set-up a semi-final clash against Croatia, who caused a big upset by beating the fancied Americans 3-2.
France would face either defending champions Great Britain, who they lost to last year, or Argentina in the final if they can oust a talented Croatian outfit.
