FRSC directs effective coverage of 52 corridors during Eid el fitr

The Federal Road Safety Corps has directed Regular and Special Marshals to effectively cover 52 corridors across the country during the Eid el Fitr celebration to ease traffic movement during the period.
Boboye Oyeyemi, the FRSC Corps Marshal, made this known on Friday in Zuba, Dankogi Motor Park, at a Special Sallah Rally organised by the FRSC in collaboration with Leadway.
Oyeyemi who was represented by Bisi Kazeem, Corps Public Education Officer, said the measure was to avert road obstructions, crashes and deaths due to heightened traffic movement during the period.
The Federal Government had declared June 4 and June  5 as public holidays to mark the Eid el Fitr which is an annual Muslim event after the Ramadan.
Oyeyemi listed the corridors to include Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin-Kebbi, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum and Kaduna-Saminaka.
Others are Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, Okene-Ogiri-Isua-Owo, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile Corridors among others.
He said during festive periods, roads always witnessed high vehicular traffic congestion, gridlock, road traffic crashes and attendant loss of lives and property.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the public enlightenment and sensitisation campaign is holding concurrently in all states including the Federal Capital Territory.
The patrol which is a nine-day exercise began Friday and will last till Saturday, June 8.
Oyeyemi further said that all hands must be on deck to ensure free flow of traffic and reduction in road crashes to stem the tide of crashes at least by 20 per cent and fatalities by 25 per cent.
He said: “As stakeholders, we must take full advantage of the opportunity to deliver reduction of fatalities in our country by being law abiding and safety-conscious road users.”
The corps marshal also directed that Mobile Courts sittings be conducted throughout the period.
He added: “The corps will also pay first-rate focus on effective traffic control, failure to install/use Speed Limit Device by commercial vehicles.”
Ibrahim Bonnet, Leadway Pensure Regional Manager North, said that the agency would continue to partner FRSC in ensuring that drivers were sensitised on the need for safer roads.
Shehu Al-Amin, Unit Commander, FRSC Zuba, urged the drivers to ensure they abided by traffic rules and codes to stay alive.
While cautioning them against speeding and drunk-driving, Al-Amin also urged them to ensure they installed Speed Limit device on their vehicles.
On his part, Isiaka Abdullahi Secretary Branch II NURTW Zuba, said called on union members to comply with traffic rules and regulations to avoid apprehension by FRSC.
