The Vatican is probing suspected financial mismanagement at the Sistine Chapel Choir, a renowned papal institution founded more than 500 years ago.
In a statement, the Vatican said Pope Francis had authorised “an investigation on the economic-administrative aspects” of the institution, “which is still ongoing”.
According to Thursday’s La Stampa newspaper, the administrative director and the musical director of the choir are suspected of money laundering, aggravated fraud and embezzlement.
The two men – Michelangelo Nardella and Monsignor Massimo Palombella – allegedly pilfered proceeds from concerts to fund personal expenses, according to La Stampa.
The Sistine Chapel Choir was founded in 1471, and considers itself the oldest choir still active in the world today.
It is made up of 20 adult singers and 35 boys aged 9 to 13.
