Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher, beating off competition from Aston Villa to secure his return to the Premier League.
The former Chelsea midfielder on Wednesday joined Spurs on a long-term deal from Atlético Madrid, bringing an end to his 18-month spell in Spain.
Tottenham are expected to pay more than £34m for the midfielder, who will wear the number 22 shirt.
Gallagher had appeared close to a move to Aston Villa, with Unai Emery’s side advancing talks over a loan deal with an obligation to buy, before Tottenham moved quickly to finalize the transfer.

“I wanted to be a Spurs player, and thankfully, the Club felt the same.
“It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch.
“I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together,” Gallagher said in the club’s statement.
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank said the club had prioritised the midfielder’s signing after sustained efforts across multiple transfer windows.
“Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” Frank said.
“He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also has huge experience across the Premier League, LaLiga and with the England national team.
“I’m excited about working with him every day, and I know the fans will love what he will bring to the team.”
Spurs’ move into the midfield market was accelerated after learning that Rodrigo Bentancur will be sidelined for three months with a hamstring injury.
Gallagher joined Atlético Madrid in August 2024, making 77 appearances and scoring seven goals, though he managed just four starts in LaLiga this season.
The transfer is also expected to strengthen Gallagher’s bid for a place in England’s World Cup squad this summer, after he was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s previous selection.
