No fewer than 10 buildings, including a school and church, have collapsed at Obeleagu Steeet and Nkissi Aroli axis of Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State following erosion caused by downpour.
The President General of COSEYL, Chief Goodluck Ibem, who made the call on Monday in Aba, said that the natural scourge was wasting farm lands and destroying homesteads in the South East hence, the need to act urgently.
About five buildings have collapsed in Auchi, headquarters of Etsako-West Local Area of Edo, following the erosion created by Saturday’s downpour.
The women numbering over 200 from Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area had claimed that the excavation had made the area vulnerable to more erosion devastation.
The call came in a resolution following a motion sponsored by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa on the menace of gully erosion in several communities of his constituency.
The hotel, the Anambra High Court, which is beside it, and the Federal High Court, a few metres, away are all being threatened by erosion.
According to him, the development has endangered various animal and plant species in the reserve, requiring urgent intervention of the Lagos and Federal Government to save the reserve.
