The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, said in a statement that the repair was necessary to complete the rehabilitation works at the opposite side of the bridge earlier embarked upon by the Federal Government, hence the need for a notice of routes diversion

After the Nigerian Civil war ended in 1970, there was the need for major infrastructural development in Lagos because it was both the commercial and administrative capital of Nigeria. The ports were bursting at the seams due to large imports of cement for the numerous construction works going on at the same time.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday disclosed that parts of Eko Bridge closed in the early hours of the day was for safety of the residents and motorists who use the bridge as well as to pave the way for maintenance works to be done on the failed portions.

The State Government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, asked all the traders under the Bridge, including those not affected by the fire incident of last Sunday, to move from the present location
