The Nigeria Police on Tuesday denied the news that had gone viral on the social media that some pupils of a school in Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja were kidnapped.
The police spokesperson for the FCT, Altine Daniel, told The Eagle Online in a telephone interview that nothing of such happened.
Altine assured parents and guardians that there was no such development and that the police and other security agencies were on top of their games to prevent any such happening.
The news had gone viral on Tuesday morning that some pupils of Divine Kiddies Academy in Nyanya had been kidnapped.
In a matter of minutes, those spreading the news altered it to read that the pupils were not kidnapped but it was only the school bus that was snatched by some armed men.
It was gathered that this created panic among parents and guardians in Nyanya area, which was hit by two deadly explosions in the last two weeks, as they started trooping to schools to take their children and wards home.
Surrounding settlements were also affected by the withdrawal of pupils from schools.
The false alarm is coming two weeks after 234 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, were reportedly kidnapped by members of dreaded sect, Boko Haram.
The school became a mixed school before the kidnap but the name was yet to be changed.
But what was snatched in Nyanya was an empty school bus.
Those who snatched the bus have been identified as armed robbers.
The bus belongs to Divine Kiddies Academy Phase 4, Nyanya.
According to security agencies, the robbers forcefully pushed the driver out and made away with the empty bus.
There was no child inside the bus at the time of the incident neither was any child taken away as is being speculated.
Meanwhile, the robbers are being trailed by security agencies, sources said.
