Rangers International of Enugu moved to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table after a 2-0 defeat of El-Kanemi Warriors in one of the Match Day 31 games played at the weekend, just as Ahmed Musa led Kano Pillars to victory.
With the Rangers, El-Kanemi Warriors game goalless as the first stanza was about to end, Daniel Itodo gave the home side the lead to open his account since joining the Enugu side from Plateau United.
Rangers maintained control after the interval and doubled their lead in the 80th minute after Godwin Obaje was played through one-on-one, finishing with precision to register his 11th league goal of the season.
There was further attacking intent as Waheed Adebayo delivered a dangerous cross which Ibrahim Yusuf flicked across the face of goal.
The result means Rangers have now gone eight matches unbeaten, recording five wins and three draws, while keeping clean sheets in seven of their last eight outings.
They climb to 54 points, two clear of Rivers United, who face Niger Tornadoes on Monday (today).
Elsewhere in the league, Musa, a former Super Eagles captain, was on the score sheet as Kano Pillars continued their battle against the drop as they defeated Enyimba 2-0 in Kano with their opponent still fighting to escape the drop.
Kun Khalifa came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Ikorodu City in Owerri with the equaliser coming in the additional time of the game.
