The national under-19 male cricket team will open camp in June ahead of the U-19 Africa Division Two Championships billed for August, coach Uthe Ogbimi said on Tuesday.
Ogbimi, who doubles as the senior national team coach, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that players would be invited to camp in Kaduna.
The coach said the team’s target was to qualify for Division One at the Africa U-19 Division Two event beginning from August 17 to August 19 in South Africa.
He said: “Our overall aim is to participate in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2020. To achieve that feat, we have to play a series of qualifiers.
“At the moment, Nigeria is placed in Division Two in Africa. Coming top at the championships in South Africa will enable us to move to Division One.
“Countries in Division One will also compete among themselves to get the top two teams to fly the continent’s flag at the ICC World Cup in 2020.’’
Countries to compete against Nigeria in the Division Two U-19 Africa Championships are Botswana, Mozambique Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania and The Gambia.
