Recent media reports have cast a spotlight on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria alleging internal discord and nepotistic practices.
As an integral part of this institution, I aim to provide clarity on these matters, underscoring NAHCON’s unwavering dedication to transparency, due process, and the welfare of both our staff and the pilgrims we serve.
Staff unions are fundamental in any organisation, advocating for employee welfare and ensuring that management remains attuned to the workforce’s needs. Recently, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria within NAHCON issued an internal memo addressing concerns about staff welfare and the placement of pool officers. Such internal communications are standard in organisations that prioritise continuous improvement and employee satisfaction.
It’s crucial to differentiate between internal memos and external petitions. The former is an internal mechanism aimed at constructive dialogue, while the latter involves external bodies and often indicates unresolved internal issues. In this instance, the ASCSN’s memo was an internal document, emphasising the union’s commitment to working collaboratively with management to address concerns.
Media reports have surfaced alleging nepotism within NAHCON’s appointments, specifically claiming that Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman appointed his son as a Personal Assistant within the Commission. As earlier stated in a press release by my boss, these allegations are unfounded and lack any basis in truth. All appointments and assignments within NAHCON adhere strictly to established civil service procedures and due process. Such misinformation not only tarnishes the reputation of the Commission but also undermines the diligent efforts of our staff who are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Under the leadership of Professor Usman, NAHCON has been proactive in implementing strategic measures to enhance the Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims. One notable initiative includes revising service contracts with Saudi-based providers to ensure a hitch-free Hajj in 2025. These adjustments were made following comprehensive assessments and consultations with stakeholders, underscoring the Commission’s dedication to operational efficiency and pilgrim welfare.
Furthermore, the recent appointment of Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Ali as the new Secretary of the Commission exemplifies our commitment to strengthening our administrative framework. Dr. Ali’s extensive experience and qualifications are expected to bring valuable insights and leadership to NAHCON’s operations.

NAHCON welcomes constructive feedback and encourages media practitioners to engage with the Commission through official channels to verify information before publication. This approach ensures that discourse remains factual, valuable, and free from sensationalism.
As preparations for Hajj 2025 gather momentum with ongoing visa issuance and a stated date of 6th May, 2025 for commencement of Inaugural flight to Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj, it is essential for all stakeholders – including our dedicated staff, the media, and the general public – to support the Commission in achieving a successful Hajj season. Unity and focus are paramount in ensuring that the guests of Allah receive the best possible service as they embark on this significant spiritual journey. By working together and maintaining a commitment to integrity and excellence, we can uphold the esteemed reputation of NAHCON and fulfill our mandate to the Nigerian Muslim ummah.
