A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Adebayo Adeniyi, is in a critical condition in an undisclosed hospital following machete and broken bottles injuries he suffered in a fight with hoodlums.
Adeniyi, who is also a community leader at Oyewole area of Agege, Lagos State, was attacked by the hoodlums after he refused to part with his cash.
It was gathered that the suspected hoodlums, numbering about six, trailed Adeniyi to a bank in the area last Friday, where he went to withdraw cash from an Automated Teller Machine.
He was subsequently dispossessed of his cash of N150,000.
The hoodlums then attempted to snatch another N50,000 Adeniyi had on him but he resisted, a move which infuriated the hoodlums who then descended on him with dangerous weapons, a source who identified himself as Kunle said.
Kunle told The Eagle Online: “Mr. Adeniyi was on a commercial motorcycle, popularly called okada, last week Friday when he was trailed by the hoodlums to the ATM machine at Oyewole area.
“The hoodlums attacked him after he withdrew his money and they collected everything from him.
“But when he attempted to stop them from collecting the money he kept in his pocket, the hoodlums got wild and they attacked him with broken bottles and other dangerous weapons, wounding him in the process.”
It was further gathered that the case was reported at the Alabo Police Station, Dopemu.
The police reportedly trailed the hoodlums to their hideout at Abule-Onigo, Ilejide Bus Stop along Iyana-Ipaja Road, a notorious den for miscreants.
Kunle added: “Abule-Onigo is a notorious hideout for all hoodlums, thugs and armed robbers.
“So the police traced the boys to that place but the hoodlums attacked the policemen with broken bottles and other dangerous weapons, which made the police to abandon their arrest.
“The policemen fled the area.”
It was also learnt that the police reinforced and came with more men and vehicles and swooped on the miscreants, arresting two of the gang leaders who have since been detained at the State Anti- Robbery Squad, Ikeja.
Another resident of the area, who does not want his name in print, blamed the gang war and frequent breakdown of law and order at Abule-Onigo and Oyewole areas of the state on hoodlums with political leaders as godfathers.
The resident said: “Residents at Abule-Onigo and environs do not sleep or walk in peace as these hoodlums usually attack anybody they see even during the day.
“The police is afraid of them and they do not come to the area even when a distress call is made to them because the boys are many and they attack people and the police with broken bottles, which they have in surplus in this area.
“So you can see that residents live in perpetual fear due to these bad boys in the area.
“They do anything they like because they have politicians backing them up and whenever they are arrested, these politicians will go to effect their release.”
