A civil society organization, the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, has demanded the release from detention of a seven-year-old boy, Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, who shot and killed a 12-year-old boy.
The position of CRRAN was contained in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
Oramalu is a Primary 2 pupil of Carmelite Nursery and Primary School, Nike Avenue, GRA, Enugu State.
The petition was signed by Olu Omotayo, the President of CRRAN.
Omotayo said Oramalu has been in the custody of policemen at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Enugu since May 30, 2016.
Nwakaego Oramalu, the victim’s mother, is a single mother of five children.
According to her, Oramalu was arrested at their residence, 5/7, Robito Cresent, Independence Layout, behind Government House, Enugu.
Oramalu’s mother, who works as a cleaner and house keeper at the earlier mentioned address, was employed by the owner of the property, Edwin Oforma, who also gave her and her children accommodation on the property.
The petition stated: “On May 29, 2016, while Mrs. Oramalu was away to Adoration Ministries for a church service, the son of her employer, Chukwunanu Oforma, a National Youth Corps member, asked Chibuike and his 10-year-old elder brother, Ifeanyichukwu Oramalu, to clean and tidy up his fathers’ room.
“Ifeanyichukwu was sweeping, while Chibuike was laid on the bed. Chibuike saw a gun near the bed and carried it; he showed the gun to Ifeanyichukwu, who asked him to return the gun. While Chibuike was returning the gun, he mistakenly pulled the trigger and a shot went off, shattered the glass window of the room, pierced the wall of the next building passed out on the other side and went and hit a 12-year-old boy, Oluebube Boniface on the chest. Oluebube died instantly. Chukwunanu, the landlords’ son, ran away. He and his father had not been seen till date.”
CRRAN is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Oramalu.
The group also called for a thorough investigation into why a seven-year-old, who is not recognized under the law as capable of committing any crime, should continue to be detained by the police.
