The Federal Government (FG) has inaugurated an 850-metre road in the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun state.
The inauguration makes a total of 83 road interventions in tertiary institutions and medical centres nationwide.
The Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWH), Blessing Lere-Adams, made this known in a statement issued Friday in Abuja.
Lere-Adams said the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, at the inauguration, said the that Buhari administration had stepped up the lead to the process of getting things done in many sectors in the country.
She said Fashola, represented by the Federal Controller of Works, Ogun State, Forosola Oloyede, said that the intervention in roads in Federal Medical Centres had taken place across the six geo-political zones in the country and the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, is a beneficiary of the one for the South West zone.
“The administration of President Muhammad Buhari has, so far, intervened in 83 internal road networks in tertiary institutions and Federal medical centres in the country.
“On job creation, about 85 people were employed during the construction of the internal roads at the centre,” Fashola said.
In his remark, the Chief Medical Director of the Centre, Prof. Adewale Olomu, commended the Federal Government for extending this infrastructural development to the centre.
Olomu said it would put an end to the erosion that usually occurs during the rainy season, thereby impeding accessibility within the hospital premises.
According to him, due to the unfavourable topographical situation of the hospital, erosion has been a yearly occurrence but when he became the Chief Medical Director in 2017, he sought the assistance of the Federal Government.
Olomu said the centre has another untarred 2.5km of road and pleaded with the Federal Government to intervene in order to facilitate easy movement within the hospital premises.
Speaking on road as a therapy, the Deputy Director, Nursing and Theartre Manager, Abosede Fagoyinbo, emphasised that good roads facilitated easy access to the hospital.
Fagoyinbo said when a sick person is being conveyed for medical treatment, the impact of a bad road on the person could worsen the situation.
The 850-metre road links the other parts of the centre to the Medical Library and new office of the Medical Director.
