The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, has decried the lack of discipline and basic knowledge on public safety by most Nigerians during disaster and emergency situations.
Sani-Sidi, who made the remark on Tuesday before the commencement of search and rescue operation at the scene of the Dana plane crash in Lagos, said the mob crowd that trooped to the scene violated the crash site, which made job of search and rescue officers difficult.
He said: “The mob-action made the task of response agencies difficult in the initial stage until the arrivals of security personnel who contained the situation.”
He added that NEMA would continue to mobilise, train and equip volunteer groups in disaster management in the country.
“Crowd-control has always being our major challenges in disaster management when some people turn the scene to a cinema to watch or engage in nefarious activities,” he said.
