Bauchi REC gives reasons for the non-conduct of Bauchi South Senatorial seat by-election.

Bauchi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, said on Friday that INEC was yet to receive notification from the National Assembly declaring Bauchi South Senatorial seat as vacant.
Abdullahi said this in Bauchi while fielding questions from reporters during a press conference in Bauchi.
It would be recalled that the seat became vacant from March 17, following the death of Senator Ali Wakili.
He said: “Section 76 subsection 2 of the Nigerian Constitution said that INEC will only conduct election into vacant position when it has received information from the National Assembly declaring such seat vacant.
“INEC is yet to receive any letter from both of the two chambers of the National Assembly and we are waiting for such process before we commence our process.
“If we receive a letter from either the Speaker of House of Representatives or President of the Senate, we will conduct the by-election.
“We have heard of interpretations and misinterpretations as to why we have refused to conduct by-election into the vacant seat, but I am not bothered because we must follow the law.
“Very soon, the two chambers will be going on Sallah break and if they resume and write the commission, it will definitely conduct election within 30 days.
“That is why I said earlier that the by-election may likely take place after the Eid-El-Fitr (Sallah) festivities.”
The INEC commissioner appealed to the people of the state, particularly people of Bauchi Southern Senatorial District to be patient and allow the law of the land prevail.
