Ban lauds Susan Rice’s appointment as US National Security Adviser

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the UN, on Wednesday lauded Susan Rice on her appointment as the US National Security Adviser.
This was contained in a statement by Martin Nesirky, the UN scribe’s spokesman, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria at the United Nations headquarters.
The UN Secretary-General said he appreciated the “dynamic role that Susan has played as US Permanent Representative to the UN since 2009”.
Ban wished her success in what he described as “important new position as she continues her distinguished career in the service of her country”.
The Secretary-General noted that Rice had been a strong voice in the Security Council and an effective advocate on full range of issues before the UN, from peace and security to human rights and development.
Ban, in the statement, noted that he had benefited greatly from Rice’s support and counsel during her stay at the UN.
The statement said in part: “He welcomes the firm commitment she so often demonstrated, in particular to African issues and on matters such as women’s empowerment.
“The UN as a whole has benefited from her commitment to strong U.S. engagement with the organisation as the world’s principal forum for addressing key global challenges through cooperative and multilateral solutions.”
The Secretary-General said he looked forward to continued cooperation with Susan in her new capacity and to welcoming her successor to the UN.
NAN reports that President Obama on Wednesday announced that Thomas Donilon, National Security Adviser, was resigning his post and would be replaced by UN Ambassador Susan.
Obama also announced the nomination of Samantha Power to replace Rice at the UN.
