As Nigeria on Thursday joined in the global celebration of World Press Freedom Day, the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has advocated compulsory insurance for journalists both in public and private sectors for a sustainable democracy in the country.
In a goodwill message in commemoration of the Press Freedom Day, Ahmed said only a free press can ensure growth, development and sustenance of democracy.
He urged states government to support the media in attaining a free society.
Ahmed commended Nigerian journalists for their uprightness and commitment to the promotion and entrenchment of democratic ethos in the country.
Ahmed noted that journalists remained reliable allies not only in the emergence of Nigerian Independence but also in the sustenance of the Nigerian nationhood.
Ahmed advised journalists to remain undaunted even in the face of recent security challenges and to also maintain the highest level of professional ethics.
He assured journalists of continuous government support in the discharge of their onerous tasks, saying that the state government recently paid the insurance premium of journalists working in the state.
