The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, has pledged the support of the police to the families of two of the victims of the crash of the police helicopter in Jos, Plateau State on Wednesday.
The deceased were Assistant Commissioner of Police Garba Yelwa and Chief Superintendent of Police, Alexander Pwol-Jah.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, “B” Department, John Haruna, and his orderly also died in the crash.
Abubakar made the pledge when he visited the families of the deceased at the Senior Police Officers Quarters at Ikeja, Lagos State.
He said: “Loss is not an easy thing to bear.
“It is a sad moment for me because I knew some of these officers personally.
“I want to assure the families that we will take care of them and the children that have been left behind.
“We will take care of their academics and protect them like our own children.
“This is the price we pay as policemen and that is why we are sad when people castigate the police.
“This is the very first accident recorded in the history of the air wing of the police.
“It is a very sad moment for me because it came at a time when I was pushing for better efficiency in the force.”
among those who accompanied Abubakar on the visit was a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo.
Yelwa is survived by a wife and five children.
