The prestigious University of Lagos is now to be known as Moshood Abiola University.
The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, announced this in his Democracy Day broadcast on Tuesday.
Jonathan, in the speech, aired live from his office in the State House, Abuja, said that Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 annulled presidential election, remains a martyr of Nigeria’s democracy.
This year’s Democracy Day, which coincides with the first anniversary of Jonathan’s administration in office, also had the President announcing the establishment of an Institute for good governance in the Moshood Abiola University.
He said that democratic institutions must be sustained as it remains the greatest honour that could be done for Abiola.
Jonathan urged the civil society, labour, activists and citizens to remain loyal to the nation.
He said steps must be taken to heal the wounds of the past.
He equally directed the establishment of a Presidential Museum in Abuja to remind Nigerians of Nigeria’s past.
