The Nigeria Police has confirmed the report first exclusively carried by The Eagle Online that a Deputy Inspector General of Police died in the crash of a helicopter in Jos, Plateau State today.
The late DIG is John Haruna, who was in charge of Operations.
Haruna, described as a full field officer, has virtually been in Jos since his appointment as DIG Operations to supervise the efforts to return peace to the city.
A source told The Eagle Online that he was the only DIG that was not at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday when the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, launched the new police uniform.
The chopper in which he crashed was said to have been bought from Bulgaria during the headship of the police by a former IGP, Mr. Sunday Ehindero.
The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Jaiyeola Joseph, confirmed Haruna’s death when he spoke with newsmen in his office.
