A group of women from Kogi Central Senatorial District has appealed to the Vice Chairman of Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman to come to the aid of women in the zone.
The women were on a solidarity visit to the office of the senator in the National Assembly, Abuja, to identify with him and present their case before him.
Commending Abatemi-Usman for not disappointing the people of Ebiraland, who came out en masse to vote for him in the April 2011 general election, they were of the opinion that women empowerment should be one of his top priorities.
According to a statement signed by Abatemi-Usman’s Special Assistant on Media, Michael Jegede, the leader of the group, Hajara Bello, noted that women play significant role in the development of the society.
Bello said women in the area have gone through pains in the past and she does not think the suffering should continue any more with the way Abatemi-Usman emerged via divine intervention.
“We thank God for all that you have been doing since you came into this office about eight to nine months ago. We see that work is already going on at Ekuku dam and Okene waterworks as part of your effort to solve the perennial water problem in Ebiraland. We are aware of what you are doing about the revitalization of the moribund Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited. But our distinguished senator, we have to beg you. Our Women need to be fully empowered as builders of the society,” Bello said on behalf of the Ebira women.
Responding, abatemi-Usman thanked the women for the visit, while assuring them that women will not be left out in his plans to bring total transformation to Ebiraland.
Abatemi-Usman said he has tremendous respect and regard for women, and as such, cannot pretend to be oblivious of the pivotal role they play in the society and nation-building.
