Union demands prompt release of monthly subvention to Kwara tertiary institutions

The Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions in Kwara has called on State Government to ensure prompt release of monthly subventions to tertiary institutions in the state.
The committee stressed that this would assist the institutions to meet their financial obligations necessary to fast track academic and administrative programmes.
The committee made the call on Saturday in a communique issued at the end of its meeting in Ilorin.
A copy of the communique made available to the News Agency of Nigeria was signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the amalgamated union, Olaitan Olomu and Mariam Issa.
However, the union said it was impressed with the state government’s intervention as regard the accreditation exercise at the College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi.
It commended the state government, urging for standardisation of academic programmes in all the tertiary institutions in the state.
It said: “CUTI commends Kwara State Government on the appointment of substantive Vice Chancellor for Kwara State University (KWASU).
“The Committee of Unions congratulate the new Vice Chancellor and wish him a successful tenure.
“The body urges the Kwara State Government to appoint substantive officers into positions where some officers are in acting capacity.”
On health, CUTI said it was impressed with state government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
It said: “The union appreciates Kwara State Government proactive measures and prompt response at curbing the spread of the pandemic in the state.
“CUTI as a body is disturbed and worried with the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.
“The body shares in the present pain with all Heads/Managements of Tertiary Institutions in the state and advises them to initiate processes that would help in cushioning the adverse effect of the pandemic on academic calendar.
“CUTI fraternises with all members in Tertiary Institutions and enjoins them to follow all directives provided at stopping the spread of the pandemic.
“Most importantly, members are advised to stay home and stay safe.”
On the welfare of members, the union called on the government to expedite action on the implementation of new national minimum wage and payment of arrears accrued over the months.
It also advised the government to appoint experienced educationalists and technocrats with untainted records and integrity as chairmen and members of tertiary institutions governing councils.
