Some electricity consumers in Lagos on Wednesday lauded the Federal Government’s directive that the Distribution Companies should provide meters for their customers rather than giving them estimated bills.
Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communications Unit, EKEDC announced the development in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.
The Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 established NERC’s authority to impose mandatory reliability standards on the transmission system and to impose penalties on companies that manipulate the electricity markets.
It also administers accounting and financial reporting regulations and conduct of regulated companies such as the DisCos.
Those presented for confirmation are Prof. Akintunde I. Akinwande, Chairman; Sanusi Garba, Vice Chairman; Nathan R. Shanti, Commissioner; Dr. Moses Arigu, Commissioner; Dafe C. Akpeneye, Commissioner; Prof. Frank Okafor, Commissioner; and Dr. Musiliu O. Oseni, Commissioner
Akah said the call became imperative in view of the serious challenge of high estimated billing due to poor metering by the Distribution Companies and low power generation
The Commission said this classification became following its directive to electricity distribution companies not to mass disconnect and subsequent attempt by some electricity customers to ride on that to evade settling their debts
He said: “We cannot accept this tariff increase in this hard economy and the illegal process that gave rise to the increase should be revisited
“The new tariff, besides eliminating fixed charge, has a robust mechanism to ensure that DISCOs (Distribution Companies) fully meter their consumers and eliminate ‘crazy’ billing within one year,” Akah said
According to the statement, NERC has directed all the distribution companies to abide by this directive and should not connect new customers without first providing them with meters
It added that Ossiomo Distribution Company would generate 55mw of gas power through embedded generation.
Other companies are Cummins Power Generation Nigeria Limited in Ikeja with capacity for 3.5mw, off-grid, and Lafarge Africa Plc for on-grid, gas-fired generation of 260mw in Ewekoro, Ogun State
