LAWMA said an abatement notice and several warnings issued to the traders yielded no result, necessitating the closure, adding that the market would be reopened when traders began to comply with government’s rules and regulations by shunning indiscriminate refuse disposal and patronizing assigned PSP operators.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, in a statement, disclosed that measures had been put in place to reposition the services of PSP operators in the state and ensure that household waste evacuation was carried out at least once in a week.
According to Gbadegesin: “The process of winding down activities at those landfill sites has commenced. There were not much human activities close to the sites at inception but fast-paced development in the state has seen houses built around them.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company has donated hundreds of overall kits to the Lagos State Waste Management Agency at their Ijora Olopa office.
Former commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Dapo Lam-Adesina is now to superintend over the Ministry of Industry, Applied Science and Technology, while Professor S. O. A. Olaniyonu is in charge of the Education ministry
