HURIWA has a history of being one of those cash and carry civil society groups that pick briefs on selective basis just to deepen their pockets and not on national interest. Oftentimes it is not just about the money but it is about the highest bidder

A pro-democracy and Non-Governmental Organization, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, said the Nigeria Police should not attempt to stop an idea whose time has come
This was disclosed on Tuesday at a media briefing by the National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko; the Nigerian Human Rights Queen (2017), Miss Chioma Okoli; and other officials
The National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said in a statement in Abuja on Monday that there was need to carry out diligent investigation on the killing of the woman
HURIWA said the “illogical, unconstitutional and compromised decision of the Kano State Attorney General to terminate the prosecution amounted to directly rewarding the riotous and unruly armed street urchins who allegedly decapitated this innocent Igbo woman only because she is of a different ethno-religious affiliation but doing legitimate trading business in Kano State”
Onwubiko said: “We call on the Federal Government to monitor activities of anti-graft agencies to avoid being used to witch-hunt perceived dissenting voices
He said that the statutory responsibility of the DSS relates primarily to national security matters, adding that deploying its operatives to anti-corruption enforcement operations would compromise and pollute its national security credentials
Onwubiko said for the government to tackle the abuses of human rights, it must first put an end to “the vicious circle of impunity and indiscipline” among the operatives and hierarchies of the law enforcement agencies
News report has it that the Enugu Universal Basic Education Board said on Monday in Enugu that it would start a School Feeding Programme in public primary schools in the state in 2016

For the benefit of Nigerians, let me use the huge public assets built in Lagos by the National government known as the National theatre. The question to be asked then is why introduce the concept of a theatre while addressing a very serious issue as SECURITY OF LIVES AND PROPERTY OF NIGERIANS
HURIWA has also for the umpteenth time canvassed bipartisan counter-terrorism platform to incorporate all facets of the political and civil society communities in Nigeria to work out effective synergy and partnership with the Federal Government and the 36 states of the federation on measures for waging relentless counter-insurgency battles that can stand the test of time
I do not wish to wet your appetites any further as I intend to just tell you what happened to me even though I do not intend to classify it as racial profiling since the bulk of the officers of the British Border team that I saw whilst my harsh encounters lasted were even darker in skin colour than my humble self whose chocolate and/or ebony black colour can be mistaken for a Black American
The national coordinator said that the federal presence in terms of agricultural and water projects had not impacted much on the lives of the people in the region
Besides, the Rights group has urged for the use of the huge financial resources being systematically amassed for election campaigns by the two dominant political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress, to be diverted to Nigeria’s defence sector for the purposes of more efficiently equipping the combatants in the frontlines of the current counter terrorism battles
Most Nigerians have understandably raised alarm that there are no visible fool proof evidences of any watertight preparations by the Nigerian ministries of health and interior to wade off the possible re-emergence of Ebola Virus Disease – an ailment which was first brought in by a foreigner from Liberia who actually escaped detection by the officials of the Nigerian Immigration Services at the International Airport in Lagos
Writers Association of Nigeria, to immediately commence the process of dismissing both Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for endangering national security through successive cocktails of spectacular derelictions of duties in defence and electoral sectors
HURIWA also asked the Federal Government to specifically set out a day within the coming year to honour with awards the combatants who excelled as a way of boosting their morale
Onwubiko said Nigeria should look towards countries in the eastern bloc such as China and Russia for effective and comprehensive mutually beneficial defence pact
The group has rather urged the hierarchies of the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Customs Service, the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Nigerian Army to jointly set up formidably equipped anti-weapons’ smuggling offices in the various entry points into Nigeria from Chad, Niger and Cameroon
