Emmanuel Onwubiko, the National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has called for the siting of more Federal Government projects in the South Eastern part of the country.
Onwubiko made the call in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that the call became necessary to ensure equity and social justice.
The national coordinator said that the federal presence in terms of agricultural and water projects had not impacted much on the lives of the people in the region.
According to him, the people of the region are yet to enjoy the multi-billion dollar agricultural and water projects such as dams among others.
He, therefore, called on the state governments in the area to partner with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and that of water resources to attract more federal projects to the region.
He warned that the region might face food insecurity in no distant time if emergency measures were not taken to attract more agricultural projects to boost food production.
Onwubiko also lamented the “underdevelopment and the rapidly declining standard of health and other basic amenities in the region”.
The HURIWA boss, therefore, urged the people of the region to put their governors and legislators on their toes, to ensure maximum dividends of democracy to them.
Onwubiko called on the state governments in the zone to utilise the enormous resources in the region effectively to augment the federal allocations.
He also urged the governors to use the internally generated revenue to rebuild the declining state of primary health care and other infrastructure in that part of the country.
He advised the people of the region not to fold their arms to security lapses but report any suspicious movement to the security personnel for prompt action.
