As the Lower Chamber of the National Assembly begin plans to elect the leadership of the House, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Niger state, Alhaji Nma Kolo, has stated that it will be injustice to scheme the North Central out of the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Kolo, while speaking to journalists in Minna over the weekend on what he called “the dynamics in the selection of the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives”, recalled that the North Central has been a strong base of the APC and as such deserves the speakership position.
Kolo, who tipped Mohammed Umar Bago to emerge as Speaker, said he is one person that has shown consistency and commitment to the President Muhammad Buhari-led government and has remained loyal to the APC.
It should be noted that Bago is one of the longest serving members of the House of Representatives representing Chanchanga Federal Constituency.
According to him: “As the elections come to a close and the business of governance stares at our face, one thing that is key is setting the agenda for governance, democracy and development.
“It becomes very key and expedient that the formation of key government players at the centre and at various levels of government is given thorough considerations.
“The North Central as a vital region of Nigerian politics has over the years played very crucial role in successive governments and the present President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of the APC.
“The North Central gave a total of 2,465,599 votes to President Muhammadu Buhari, thereby making it one of the stakeholders in the APC administration.
“The zone deserves one of the major political positions.
“After all the President is from North West, the Vice President from South West, Senate President given to North East apparently, North Central that has been a committed zone to APC deserves the Speaker’s position.
“And one state from the North Central that has always made great inputs to the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari and deserves to occupy that leadership slot is Niger State. It has always given the ruling APC over 80 per cent votes of the total ballot and also ensure all the National Assembly seats are taken by the ruling party.”
Apparently supporting Bago, Kolo said: “One person that has shown consistency in his commitment to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government and has remained loyal to the APC is Mohammed Umar Bago, Member House of Representatives for Chanchanga Federal Constituency.
“Moreover he is very popular among his colleagues and has been one of the longest serving members of the green chamber. He has played vital role in the success of the many committees that he has work or served.”
Kolo therefore appealed to APC Members in the House of Representatives and other members from the North central to rally round and support Hon. Bago to emerge.
