The Senate has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to unbundle N40 billion budget proposal for 2020.This was as INEC demanded additional N5 billion in the 2020 budget to conduct governorship elections in two states next year. The Senate Committee on Appropriation gave the directive on unbundling of INEC budget when the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC appeared before the Appropriation Committee to submit the budget of the electoral body.Members of the Appropriation Committee, led Senator Jubril Barau, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of INEC to bundle its budget in a single line item .Barau specifically said it was not a good culture for INEC to present N40 billion budget in a single line item.Barau added: “It is good you break it down to personnel, overhead and capital cost. The break down would ensure a proper oversight and monitoring.”Another member of the Committee, Senator Abba Moro, said: “It is not the correct thing to do as accountability will be very blurred.”The Chairman of Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, however promised to invite the electoral body on Monday for the unbundling of 2020 budget proposal of the Commission.
