Super Eagles lost out their respect as the African Champions following a disgraceful 3-2 loss to the Red Devils of Congo at the UJ Esuene stadium, Calabar, on Saturday.
The Stephen Keshi boys started the game on a good footing Celtic star Ambrose Efe grabbing the first of tie with a close touch to the Congolese goalmouth.
The defender connected Echiejile’s nod in to shot the hosts ahead in the 15th minute of the tie. Moments later, the Congolese leveled up as Prince Onianguie tapped in.
The Nigerians appear sloppy and jittery in the midfield as Oduamadi and Ogenyi Onazi failed to connect with the attackers.
Ahmed Musa almost caught the Congolese nappy in the 25th minute, connecting Echiejile’s long pass but the CSKA Moscow striker’s effort was not enough to put the Nigerians in the lead.
The Congolese were close to scoring the second goal of the night but Onianguie header went wide in the 30th minute.
Musa turned out to be the tormentor in chief of the Red Devils only for the pacy forward to be brought down by onrushing Massa who was in goal for Congo.
The Congo team again came calling with another goal from Nganga Francis who tapped in while Nigeria’s defenders were ball watching in the 43rd minute of heart breaking tie.
On resumption, the Nigerian side looked ambitious and wanting to change the table. Uchegbu Nwafor’s strike missed the goal by whiskers.
Desperate to level up, the duo of Nosa Igiebor and Emmanuel Emenike were through into the party. Both players replaced Ramon Azeez and Nwofor.
But before the newly introduced players could settle down into the game, the Congolese earned a penalty. Danger man Bifouma Thievy stepped up to make it 3-1 in the 51st minute.
The Nigerian lads started to ask questions with several attacking forays into the vital areas of the Congolese.
Igiebor’s close range effort saved by the parried by the goalkeeper to keep the score line at 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Warri Wolves’ striker, Gbolahan Salami was thrown in to salvage the situation. The Nigerian Balotelli replaced Crotone of Italy midfielder Oduamadi in the 75th minute. Despite this changes, it was the Congolese that were close scoring but Foude Done’ failed to direct his header.
Salami was able to give the Nigerians some hope with a goal to make it 3-2.
