Nigerian striker, Osaze Odemwingie, will depart Rotherham United at the end of his contract, the club interim manager, Paul Warne, has confirmed.
Osaze signed a short-term deal with the Millers until the end of this month, but missed out victory over Norwich City with a calf problem.
Warne confirmed in his post match press that he had a conversation with the 35-year-old this week, and the former West Brom striker is now expected to look for a move to guarantee him regular first-team football.
“Peter is leaving the club. I got a text the other day saying ‘thanks’ and that his career might be elsewhere,” caretaker manager Warne said. “I have got no issues with that. If people don’t want to be here, that’s fine.”
The former Premier League player was banned for three matches when he was red-carded for elbowing Liam Cooper against Leeds United in November and then pulled out of last week’s FA Cup tie against Oxford United when he was injured in the warm-up.
Warne added: “I’ll keep in touch with Peter for the rest of my life. He is one great human being. Peter wants to play football and I get it. I have no ill feeling towards him for that. He doesn’t have to stay, so we wish him well.”
Warne, whose beat Norwich City 2-1 on Saturday despite being hit by injuries and player departures, is hoping to start his recruitment in the January transfer window very shortly.
“I am hopeful that we get one or two in,” he said. “As you could see from my bench against Norwich, we are very thin on the ground. I have been told that one lad is coming in Monday or Tuesday.”
