A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court has remanded one Philip Mpunga, a commercial motorcycle operator, of Old Otukpo Road, Makurdi, Benin State. for alleged Armed robbery.
The Magistrate, Sonia Yaikyur, did not take the plea of the defendant for want of jurisdiction on Thursday.
She ordered that the accused person be remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre while the court awaited legal advice.
Yaikyur adjourned the case to May 19 for further mention.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector James Ewache, told the court that the case was reported at A Division Police Station by one Veronica Hembafan of 2, Suzan Odua Street, old GRA Makurdi, Benue State on April 16.
Ewache said the complainant reported that she closed from her business centre at Oladam old GRA, Makurdi and was headed home when the defendant trailed her home.
The defendant, armed with a pistol, attacked her, beat her up and robbed her of her itel phone valued at N25,500 and in the process she sustained injuries on her elbow.
The complainant raised alarm while her relatives and neighbours came to her rescue and apprehended the suspect.
During police investigation, the pistol and itel phone were recovered from the suspect as exhibits.
The prosecutor said investigation into the matter was still in progress and asked the court for another date for mention.
He said the offence contravened section 1(1) (2) (a) (b) of the Robbery and Firearms special provision Act of 2004.
