Former Chairman of Arochukwu Local Government, Hon. Chibuike Jonas, has warned the local government chairmen in Abia State not to take the will of the people for granted.
The ex-chairman charged them to step up and deliver on their development promises or face the consequences of political relegation.
With the autonomy granted to local governments by President Bola Tinubu, Jonas emphasised that chairmen have no excuse for non-performance, given the significant funds at their disposal.
“The Financial Crimes Watchdog is keenly watching, and they must give an account of every billion naira they’re signing out,” he cautioned.
The former Chairman reminded the chairmen that their position is a trust given by the people, and they’re accountable to them alone. “Their performance will determine whether they’ll go further in life or politically die a natural death,” he warned. “The clock is ticking, the people are watching keenly.”

Reflecting on his tenure as Arochukwu chairman, the chieftain of the All Progressives Congress noted that he achieved significant impact despite a limited budget. Current chairmen have a greater opportunity to deliver, with huge funds allocated to local governments annually.
Jonas emphasised that Tinubu has shown genuine concern by releasing funds directly to the chairmen of local governments, as has not been seen before in the history of governance at both the state and local levels. He believes that local government leaders are closest to the people, indicating that his development policies, aspirations, and actions are grassroots-focused as effective means to combat poverty right from its roots.
Upon taking office amid a devastated and struggling economy, the president took immediate action to recover the economy through people-oriented policies. This gesture must not be undermined by indifference or underperformance at all levels of leadership, including local government. “To whom much is given, much is also expected,” he stated.
The APC chieftain stressed that excuses won’t be tolerated, and the people of Abia State expect tangible results. “We achieved remarkable progress with a modest budget; those entrusted with leadership must rise to the occasion or face serious political consequences,” he declared.
His call comes as Abia State is poised for growth, with President Tinubu’s administration prioritising infrastructure and regional development. The people of Abia State demand excellence from their leaders, and the chairmen must accept this challenge head-on.
