Gunmen suspected to be members of dreaded sect, Boko Haram, have shot and killed a State Security Service officer in Damaturu, Yobe State.
The AFP, which first reported the development, said though the police confirmed the shooting, it could not confirm if the officer died.
The Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Police Command, Lawan Tanko, confirmed the shooting.
Tanko, however, said he was not sure the SSS officer, whose identity could still not be confirmed as at press time, died.
Tanko said: “I received the report of the gun attack on the state security service officer in Jeri.
“He was shot by two gunmen outside his house.
“It is still not clear if he was just injured or that he was actually killed.”
The SSS officer was reported to be “sitting outside his house with some friends this evening when two gun came through the back street in Jeri district of the town and opened fire on him and killed him,” a resident of the area told the AFP.
The attackers, the resident further explained, detonated some explosives to create panic and pave the way for their escape.
The victim’s friends ran away during the attack, the resident said.
