A group in Ekiti State, the Coalition of Democracy Vanguard, has petitioned the Code of Conduct Bureau, urging it to investigate the source of the funding of a filling stattion owned by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adewale Omirin.
The group, in the petition signed by its President, Femi Omoyajowo, and Secretary, Hon. Bolu Alabi, said the speaker contravened the oath he took on August 6, 2011 when he was elected speaker of the assembly.
The group further stated in the petition dated October 27, 2014 and addressed to the CCB’s office in Ado Ekiti, that the speaker had breached the oath of office and needed to be arrested and prosecuted.
It would be recalled that the government had shut five filling stations, including T. FIVE Integrated Petrol Station in Ado Ekiti, owned by the speaker, for being cited in residential areas.
Omirin alleged that the filling stations shut belonged to those in the opposition and that he (speaker) was being victimised for not joining the Peoples Democratic Party, to which the state Governor, Ayo Fayose, belongs.
The petition was entitled: “Petition Against Rt Hon Adewale Omirin ,The Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly.”
It reads: “We hereby refer the Code of Conduct Bureau to the breach of oath of office/allegiance took by Rt Hon Adewale Omirin, the owner of T. FIVE Integrated Station in Ajilosun, Ado Ekiti.
“We have to believe that Hon Omirin declared his assets to the CCB before he assumed office and the leadership of the number three personality in Ekiti State as stipulated by Nigeria’s constitution.
“However, it amazes us to read on daily newspapers and other social media/state electronic media the claim by Hon Omirin as the owner of the petrol station. T FIVE Petrol Station along Ikere road, Ajilosun, Ado Ekiti.
“We equally believe that by provision of the 1999 constitution as empowered the CCB , negates the oath taken and the declaration of his assets using the public funds to enrich himself when he is still the speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly.”
The group called on the Bureau to carry out a thorough investigation to test the veracity of Omirin’s claim that he was the true owner of the petrol station.
“We shall be eagerly waiting to see the immediate arrest and prosecution of Hon Adewale Omirin,” it added.
But the speaker at a press conference in Ado Ekiti recently said he had not beached any constitution over the ownership of the petrol station.
Omirin declared: “I have not breached the constitution. There is no law that forbids me from investing my money.
“Apart from this, I am not involved in the running of the business that is what the law prohibits.
“As I am talking to you, I still have a functional hospital as a medical practitioner being run by experts. So the allegation that I used public funds is misdirected and unfounded.”
