The Director-General of Delta Direct Labour Agency, Emmanuel Igbini, said the agency has rehabilitated 90 per cent of failed roads in the state.
Igbini, who disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Asaba, said Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan had mandated the agency to rehabilitate 159 failed roads across the state.
According to him, the state government has released N2 billion for the road rehabilitation projects.
He added: “In fact, the governor declared a state of emergency on the roads and based on that I can tell you that about 90 per cent of our set target has been realised.
“We are already preparing for the execution of the second phase of the assignment and like we did in the first phase, we are not going to be influenced by politicians.”
He said the agency was competent to engage in full road construction with three asphalt plants located at Agbor, Oghara and Agbaroto in Ughelli.
Igbini also noted that the state government had in 2010 spent about N1.5 billion to purchase heavy duty equipment such as bulldozers for the agency.
He said: “But the governor in his wisdom has mandated DLA to strictly focus on rehabilitation works and not to get into third party contract.
“The government’s intervention in this regards by releasing the N2 billion to DLA, has made it easier for the agency to undergo repairs of failed roads and the opening up of rural roads.
“So the agency’s contribution to the “Delta Beyond Oil” agenda of the state government is obvious to open up the rural communities to enable the farmers have access to the market.”
On the 22nd anniversary of creation of the state, Igbini said that the state remained one of the most peaceful in the country.
He said that though the state had in the past witnessed its share of violence, it was now peaceful due to the pragmatic approach of the governor and other stakeholders in piloting its affairs.
He called on the people of the state to sustain the prevailing peace to allow for further development.
