Legal fireworks have rented the air in the race to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State next year.
The Senator, representing Delta North Senatorial District, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has slammed a N20 billion suit against one of his detractors.
The lawmaker thereafter raised the alarm over attempts by his enemies to truncate his political career and eliminate him.
His anger was aggravated by what he tagged “a damaging publication” in the Leadership newspaper of June 29, 2014 at page 11, credited to one John Agbe.
Okowa, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and a trailblazer in the oil rich state’s governorship rat race next year, has been enmeshed in several murder cases.
Although he has denied sponsoring an alleged ‘Killer Squad’ operating in both Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas of the state in several statements issued and signed either by himself or his Personal Assistant, Hillary Ibegbulem, the dust raised by the recent attempt to kill one Sunny Okonye in Agbor over the defacing of his campaign billboard has refused to settle.
Barely two days ago, an open letter, backed with photographs, was written and published by one Charles Chimezie, counsel to the Agbe family, to President Goodluck Jonathan, still fingering the Senator as the mastermind and financier of the killer squad in the state.
In suit No. A/151/2014, filed at the High Court of Delta State, dated 01/07/2014, deposed to by one David Gidigbo, the senator’s solicitor, Peter Mrakpor, said in Asaba on Thursday that the cases of murder, attempted murder and vandalization leveled against the lawmaker were calculated attempts by his detractors to harm him.
Mrakpor said the content of the provoking write ups were incorrect, untrue and damaging.
He said Okowa had no other option than to seek redress in court.
