The National Union of Air Transport Employees says it has resolved its dispute with the management of Air France-KLM over the recent sack of some of the airline’s staff.
NUATE’s Assistant General Secretary, Olayinka Abioye, disclosed this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
NAN reports that the dispute began after Air France-KLM handed over its Document Checking Unit to a private firm, Checkport Security Nigeria Limited.
The move had rendered the staff of the unit redundant, leading to their disengagement from the services of Air France-KLM.
NUATE had kicked against the move, claiming that extant labour laws were flouted by the airline in paying off the affected workers.
Following the development, the union, on July 1, picketed the office of Air France-KLM at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and disrupted its flight operations.
However, Abioye told NAN that the dispute was resolved after four days of negotiations at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity in Abuja
He said: “We have resolved all the issues with the airline.
“The airline agreed to pay one and a half months severance pay and other entitlements to the affected workers.
“The affected workers are no longer employees of Air France-KLM, having been properly disengaged.”
According to him, the union also appealed to the airline to prevail on the third party (Checkport Security) to look at the qualifications of the workers and re-engage their services.
Abioye reiterated NUATE’s commitment to protecting the interest of airline employees and ensuring that they operate under the best working environment.
