Policemen attached to the Alade Police Station in Lagos State have arrested a 25-year-old man, David Nnebong, for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl said to be his niece.
The incident happened on Monday at 18, Awoseyin Street, Somolu, where Nneobong, from Cross River State, is said to be living with his sister, Blessing Nneogbong, the mother of the girl.
The victim’s mother was said to have travelled to the village and left her child in the custody of her grandmother, simply identified as Iya Wura.
Iya Wura in turn left the child in the custody of David and went to the market to buy some food stuff.
But when she came back, she noticed that the little girl was crying and was in great pains.
A neighbour, who requested anonymity, said: “This young man raped a baby in his care and pretended as if nothing happened.
“The girl was in pains and when the grandmother came back, she kept pointing at her private part and wailing.
“It was then the grandmother became suspicious and raised the alarm on David but Iya Wura and other relatives refused to report the matter to the police.
“However, neighbours would not hear of it and they dragged David to the police station, where he is being investigated but the family members are not willing to go and make a statement against him.”
It was further gathered that the girl was taken to the hospital for check up.
Neighbours said they saw semen on her body.
