A United Kingdom court on Friday sentenced Ekweremadu to a total of nine years and eight months imprisonment.
The Old Bailey heard on Monday, Ekweremadu was said to have illegally paid a street trader from Lagos, to travel to the UK, for a donation to help his daughter, who suffers from a kidney disease.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ukpo, through his lawyer, Bamidele Igbinedion, had filed a motion on notice, urging Justice Inyang Ekwo to set aside the orders, directing some agencies of government and banks to release his biodata to Ekweremadu and his wife.
While she was granted bail, her husband, who is the lawmaker representing Enugu West Senatorial district, was denied bail.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan who disclosed this after a closed-door session of the chamber on Wednesday, added that a delegation of the Chamber would on or before Friday this week visit Ekweremadu and his wife in London.
This was contained in an originating summon filed by his lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), at the Federal High Court.
It said this following the arrest of Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, for organ harvesting and human trafficking.
That said, it is important to use this unfortunate circumstance as a teachable moment for Nigerians on the strict rules of the United Kingdom on organ transplants. Many Nigerians have rushed to share a letter purportedly written by Ike Ekweremadu to the UK Embassy to facilitate the travel of an organ donor for his child. The letter was written on the official letterhead of Ekweremadu as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Those sharing the letter hold the view that the letter is a full-disclosure instrument that ought to exonerate the Senator.
Recall that the Metropolitan Police on Thursday announced the arrest of the couple and arraigned them also same day.
