Dr. Jamoh who disclosed this during a media interactive session in Lagos, noted that despite the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agency ensured improved Port and Flag State Administration in accordance with the safety requirements of the Merchant Shipping Act 2007.

The agreement was reached in a meeting between the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh and Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd.), in Abuja on Thursday.
Dr. Jamoh who expressed sadness over the incident, regretted that this is happening when the Nigerian maritime industry is witnessing tremendous gains in the nation’s maritime security sphere and are getting commended for the progress both locally and internationally.
Dr. Jamoh made the remarks in Lagos during the graduation ceremony of officers trained to crew the Special Mission Vessels, the main maritime component of the project, also called the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure.
Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Kitack Lim said the country had made important contributions to the fight against piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea maritime domain, foremost among them the recent launch of the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, also called the Deep Blue Project.

Referring to the Suppression of Piracy and other Maritime Offences (SPOMO) Act, which he signed into law in June 2019, the President said, “I am confident that the project, which provides a robust maritime security architecture, will enhance maritime domain awareness capability and improve law enforcement action.”
Preparatory to the launch, the Maritime Security Unit (MSU) of the Deep Blue Project, comprising personnel from the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police and Department of State Services, will conduct simulation exercises for the event on the land, air and sea assets of the project to confirm their readiness for full deployment.
The Agency donated educational materials to the school as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
The governor said NIMASA’s plan for sustainable use of Nigeria’s abundant maritime resources was in line with the country’s economic diversification drive.
The Nigerian Army delegation said the courtesy call was to explore areas for further collaboration with NIMASA.
Both agencies of the Federal Government noted that full automation of processes at the nation’s ports would go a long way to curb human interface, delays and corruption at the ports. NIMASA and the Nigerian Shippers Council thus agreed to harmonise the implementation of Port and Flag State Administration to minimise human direct contact onboard vessels, calling at the nation’s ports in line with provisions in the Nigerian Port Process Manual (NPPM).
