Guinness Nig. Plc. says it will not stop its commitment to reduce road crashes in Nigeria through more collaborative efforts with the Federal Road Safety Commission.
The company’s Managing Director, Peter Ndegwa, made the assertion on Thursday at the flag off of the Guinness/FRSC Ember Month campaign against road crashes, held at its headquarters, WEMCO Road, Ogba.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Guinness/FRSC Ember Month campaign against road crashes, tagged: “Responsible Drinking’’ is aimed at sensitising private and commercial drivers against dangers inherent in drink-driving.
Highlights of the 13-year-old ember month campaign includes road shows, public talk and awareness at various motor parks and garages among others.
On the partnerships with FRSC, Ndegwa said that the programme with the corps would be extended to all the year round affairs as against the ember month campaign.
He said: “We want to improve on our partnerships, so, the campaign against drink-driving will not be only an ember month campaign again; it will be an all year round campaign.
“We know the importance of responsible drinking, hence we want to guide against road crashes that may be linked to drink-driving.
“After the ember month campaign, we will go further to start another one that will take us through the whole year.
“For this year’s campaign, we will also be involved in Radio programmes and campaign in all the motor garages in Lagos; it will be an aggressive campaign different from others in the past.”
Also the Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, Hyginus Omeje, said that the Lagos State Command was ready to provide more sensitisation aimed at commercial drivers.
Omeje said: “We are ready to provide more enlightenment campaign aimed at commercial drivers. This is because of high vehicular and commuter movement during the festive season.
“We want to disabuse their minds of drink-driving; most of the road crashes in Nigeria are due to human factor which drink-driving takes a front role.
“Many wants to maximise profits, they are on the rush to pick passengers but we have been in the forefront of discouraging this.
“From the research, road crashes accounts for about 90 per cent of national transport needs in Nigeria which shows the bad attitudes of our commercial drivers.’’
