The Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Wednesday charged the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Festus Ovie Agas, not to forget that leadership is about service that is unencumbered by ethnicity, nepotism and greed.
Okowa said since today’s society associated leadership with position and power, it could be tempting to covet commonwealth for selfish purposes.
At Agas’ swearing in Asaba, the Governor specifically warned the SSG not to allow parochial interest and self-ambition to truncate his five-point agenda, encapsulated in in the acronym S.M.A.R.T.
The Governor, who emphasized that he designed the agenda to enthrone a legacy of wealth and prosperity for the people of the state, urged Agas to avail himself of the necessary laws that guide governance.
He said: “This administration will leave no stone unturned to ensure that development is brought to every corner of this state. While we evolve policies and programmes that will ensure the greatest happiness for the greatest number of Deltans, we will need time to deal with the challenge of debt overhang.
“The future that we all seek has no room for parochial interests and self-ambition but mutual cooperation and benevolent spirit that recognises and caters for the yearnings and aspirations of the citizens.
“We must be willing to commit ourselves to the new order, an era of love for all, where the good of all takes precedence over the gain of one.”
Governor Okowa therefore implored the SSG to be conscious of the enormous responsibilities, which have been thrust on his shoulders and be aware of the fact he is the fulcrum around which government business revolves, advising him to be tactful, objective, just, resourceful and calm at all times and pursue duties with the required diligence in line with state government’s avowed commitment to transparency, accountability, justice and fairness.
Responding, Agas pledged not to betray the confidence reposed in him but discharge his duties diligently, without fear or favour.
