Operatives of the Borno State Police Command, on Monday averted a potential security disaster in Maiduguri following the recovery and safe disposal of an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) discovered beneath a telecommunications mast in the city.
The recovery, according to a statement issued by the Command, was carried out under the leadership of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, after residents alerted the police to a suspicious object at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area of Maiduguri.
“At about 1106hrs, a report was received through the Divisional Police Officer, ITE Police Division, regarding a suspected explosive device discovered beneath a network mast located at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area, Maiduguri,” the statement noted
Upon receiving the report, CP Abdulmajid immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.
The EOD-CBRN team promptly cordoned off the area and, in line with standard operating procedures, successfully rendered the device safe, thereby preventing a possible explosion and loss of lives and property.
Preliminary reports revealed that the UXO, which had two protruding wires, was deliberately planted to cause significant damage.

Items recovered at the scene included “one hand plier, a T-shirt and a pair of shoes,” suggesting possible involvement of unidentified suspects.
Following the operation, the police conducted safety awareness and sensitization sessions for residents of the area, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious objects or movements to security agencies.
The statement further quoted the Commissioner of Police as charging “all Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and fortify critical public and private assets, especially communication facilities and other sensitive infrastructure, to prevent acts of sabotage and ensure sustained public safety.”
The Borno State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that investigations were ongoing.
“The situation has since been brought under control, and normal activities have resumed in the area,” the police said, while advising members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
