The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has declared a zero-tolerance policy against motorists who eat, drink, or smoke while driving, warning that offenders could attract jail terms.
LASTMA made the announcement on its official X handle on Wednesday, stating, “Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018.”
The agency noted that the law is aimed at ensuring safety on the roads by preventing distracted driving.
According to the law, violators risk having their vehicle impounded, facing three months imprisonment, or being sentenced to six months of community service, depending on the severity and judicial outcome.
This development comes amid the rising number of road accidents and the resulting avoidable loss of lives in the state.
