The Sango-Ota Command of Federal Road Safety Corps has appealed to the Federal Government and Ogun Government to re-design the toll-gate at the Sango-Ota axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, the FRSC Unit Commander in Sango-Ota, who made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Sango-Ota, said that an improved design of the toll-gate would stem the incessant accidents in the area.
Oguntoyinbo was reacting to the multiple accidents in the neighbourhood on Tuesday, which claimed two lives and injured 18 persons.
He blamed the incessant motor accidents at the toll-gate area of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on the nature of the road and the careless attitude of some drivers.
He said: “There is an urgent need to re-design the toll-gate because of recent crashes on the road which claimed several lives and destroyed many properties.”
Besides, Oguntoyinbo noted that three sloppy roads, the Sango-Tollgate road, Ilo-Awela-Tollgate and Ajegunle-Tollgate road, converged on the Sango-Ota toll-gate.
He said that in spite of the presence of FRSC on the highway and the aggressive public enlightenment of the corps on road safety, the topography of the road had always remained a major challenge.
Oguntoyinbo, therefore, underscored the need to erect a flyover in the neighbourhood and level the slopes of the road as part efforts to stem carnage on the road.
He said that the proposed included the construction of a standard bus stop at the toll-gate, the construction of rumble strips to alert and slow down motorists and the erection of barriers on the Ilo-Awela road to prevent articulated vehicles from using the road.
He also stressed the need to construct a pedestrian bridge and fix road signage by the roadside in the area so as to caution motorists of the potential dangers ahead.
The FRSC commander, however, urged motorists to always reduce their speed while approaching the Sango-Ota toll-gate, adding that they should also imbibe good vehicle maintenance culture.
He also appealed to hawkers and pedestrians to stay off the road and be safety conscious so as to avoid being knocked down by vehicles.
