To further enhance economic advancement of the country, the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday awarded contract for the reconstruction of five federal roads, in the sum of N124 billion.
Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said 30 roads that were either constructed or reconstructed by the present administration are also ready for commissioning.
The breakdown of the contracts, according to the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, and his Minister of State, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, who both flanked Maku, showed that contract for the reconstruction of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos State was awarded to Julius Berger in the sum of N14.9 billion for a period of 15 months.
From the North-East, contract for the reconstruction of the Mokwa-Bida Road was awarded in the sum of N10.9 billion for a period of 24 months.
Also, the reconstruction of Akure-Ilesha Road was awarded in the sum of N7.3 billion for a period of 21 months while that of the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway was awarded to Setraco in the sum of N39.5 billion for 40 months.
Lastly, contract for the reconstruction of Aba-Umahia Expressway was awarded to Arab Contractors in the sum of N50.8 billion, with a completion period of 40 months.
Also, sequel to memo brought to Council by the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, FEC approved contract for the design, manufacture and supply of six units of 40MVA 132/33kv mobile substations.
Justifying the contract, Nebo said the contract was in pursuit of the ongoing reinforcement of transmission substations nationwide.
Maku said: “The contract was for the purpose of maintaining continuity of supply to consumers during major works at existing substations.
“A total of 138 direct jobs would be created at the six sub-stations and 1,380 indirect jobs as a result of a multiplier effect on the economy.
“After consideration, FEC approved the memo, complete with spare parts and accessories, in favour of Messrs Liaoning Efacec Electrical Equipment Company Limited in the sum of $10,278,650, payable at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment and N247,358,795.85, for port clearing, transportation and VAT, with eight months delivery period.”
Maku, said a lot of progress is being recorded in the power sector, saying seven of the 10 power plants being built under the NIPP programme, as well as 150 injection sub-stations out of the 220 being built are ready for commissioning.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, in a memo brought to Council, sought and got approval for domestication and ratification of three UN treaties on arms, terrorism and hostage taking.
Consequently, the Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, was mandated to prepare the final documents for the ratification.
