The Nigerian league has been hit with yet another sad news with the reported death of Enyimba International of Aba Team Manager, Anthony Ekwereonu, in the United Arab Emirates.
Ekwereonu was 56 years old.
It was gathered that the team manager, who goes by the sobriquet Deboy, had been battling with an unknown ailment for close to three months, leading to his admission at an undisclosed hospital in Aba, Abia State in December.
After battling the ailment without success, the management of the two times African champions approved of his treatment in India.
He travelled on Wednesday.
It was while in transit in Dubai that he reportedly died at the airport in the early hours of Thursday.
Officials of Enyimba refused to confirm the death.
According to the Chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, only the family could confirm the death.
Anyansi-Agwu said: “We are aware he went to India for treatment and we have also heard the rumour but we are yet to get the information from the family.
“That is all I can tell you now.”
The late team manager was a successful businessman before he was appointed as an aide to the chairman prior to his elevation to the position of team manager.
He was married twice with five children.
The first wife bore him two children while the second wife gave birth to two boys and a girl.
The eldest daughter, it was gathered, finished from the Bell University, Ota, Ogun State and she is now based in the United Kingdom.
