The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State has detained a dispatch rider for allegedly stealing medical equipment worth N34.4 million.
The Zonal Public Relations Officer and a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Umma Ayuba, confirmed this development in a statement on Tuesday.
Ayuba said that the petitioner reported that the suspect ran away with the goods.
She said: “A medical doctor in Ile-Ife, Osun State reported that he contacted the suspect on April 15 to deliver medical equipment from Ikotun and Ikeja to Idumota, Lagos for onward delivery to a client in Zamfara.
“The petitioner alleged that the suspect made away with all the medical equipment and has since been out of reach as all efforts to reach him proved abortive and all his phone lines turned off.”
Ayuba said that the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone, Adegoke Fayoade, detailed the Officer-in-Charge, Zonal Anti-Crime Unit and his team for discreet investigation.
She added: “The investigating team swung into action and were able to discover the suspect’s location in Adoka Community in Benue.

“Thereafter the team proceeded on investigation activities to Benue where the suspect was apprehended in his hideout at Ugbokpo Community.
“Upon the arrest, all the items were recovered except the Mindray DP 10 Laptop-Ultrasound valued N3.4 million which was sold for N1 million to a person in the Mushin area of Lagos.
“Upon questioning, he confessed that having sold the ultrasound-laptop, he kept the remaining items with his sister in Ihiala area of Anambra before relocating to Adoka, Benue where he was apprehended.”
The ZPRO said that items recovered were: Mindray SV 300 Laptop Ventilator XI, Mindray 3-part Hematology Analyzer XI, Mindray Patient Monitor X2, Patient Monitor Trolley X2, Zoncare 12 lead ECG XI and Mindray DP 10 Laptop Ultrasound XI.
According to the image maker, the investigation is ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court upon its completion.
